No Tears

March 31, 2009

Surgery day.
He was mean to the nurses this morning. I could tell he was mad at what they were doing to him. He didn't understand. It was hard to pry his arms from my neck so they could take him to the surgery room. As the nurse walked away from me with Jack in her arms, I could see his sad eyes at the end of the hall. At least he wasn't yelling at them anymore.

The surgery went fast and he did wonderfully! He threw up once in the recovery room, and that was good. He needed to get "that stuff" out of his stomach. It was not good that he coudln't stop throwing up once we took him home. For the next 8 hours he didn't keep anything down. We tried anti nausea suppositories. I couldn't keep him hydrated. With no pain meds in his little body, he stopped talking. Sometimes he would nod, but that was it.

Dr. Fox kept calling. She called every few hours. By 6:00 pm It was time to meet her at the hospital. No tears appeared in Jacks eyes. Nothing for me to wipe from his face. He was crying but they weren't there. Not a sound crawled between his lips when they gave him the IV. He was too tired to be mean to the nurses again.

"Sleep with me." We snuggled until it was too late. I needed to get home to relieve my dear friend who was watching the other kids. I left him there at the hospital with his wonderful father.

I hope there will be no pranks today. Too tired for that. Ok, maybe I could handle a couple. We will get to bring Jack home today. He is doing great! Thanks for all of the help and comments. I appreciate them so much. We are doing much better.

Update......

We are home now! He did awesome this morning so they let us bring him home. Jack still won't smile, but I have a feeling he will soon. I am so grateful for friends. Thanks for being willing to help.

Marci- That made me cry about little Jack. I hope everything is on the mend again. I hate it when kids get sick, I hate to see their sick eyes, but I am glad that he is doing better. I hope everything is ok with you, let me know if you need anything from afar!!!

Marci,
I am sooo sorry! Glad to hear he is doing better. How old is Jack? Carson had surgery to remove his tonsils, anoid, and tubes in his ears about a year ago (a month before his 3 birthday)! He refused to drink, eat, take medicine. He was miserable (so was I)! We finally took him back in and they had to IV him and give him fluids because of dehydration and they gave him some dilated (the good pain reliever - 6 times as strong as morphine -- I know this because grant had a lot of it during his stay in the hospital). Carson hardly said a word for 3 weeks! And then when he did his voice was high and different! I was so worried, but it eventually went back to pretty normal! Hate to tell you that the recovery was really rough, but worth it in the end. He actually started sleeping well for the first time in his life! I will pray that Jack's recovery isn't too miserable (for your sake too!)!

Hey guys! Thanks so much for the comments. I find a lot of comfort and strength in knowing I am not alone. Thanks for thinking about me and my family. I love you all and miss you all very much. We are doing really good. My ward girlfriends stepped in and scrubbed my house, took my kids and are bringing dinners...way more than I feel I deserve. They are amazing. Anyway, hope you all are doing good. We are on the mend, and I am crawling into bed now. Goodnight everyone!

Poor Jack! What a tough guy to go through all that. Please give him a big hug from Mark & Liz and let him know we are so excited to come visit next weekend.

Oh Jack I hope you are downing the popsicles and ice cream soon. This will be the only time mom will allow it so all you have to do is ask and she will get it for you I promise (and it keeps the doctors far away, they can be so mean sometimes) :).
